February 18, 2015 (BOISE, ID)– More than 1,200 Junior High and High School students from throughout the valley will get a day off from school to head to Bogus on Thursday and Friday. The students, members of Bogus Basin’s Junior High/High School Race Program, will participate in a long-standing Treasure Valley tradition: the 55th Annual Dotty Clark Memorial Races. The program offers an affordable opportunity for young skiers/snowboarders of all levels to experience the thrill and fun of competition. To earn a slot in the Dotty Clark, students are required to participate in at least three Saturday races earlier in the season.
Boise resident Bob Gudmundsen won the first Dorothy Clark Memorial Giant Slalom race on March 16, 1960 at the age of 15. “It’s always a thrill to experience winning, and I remember feeling proud and very lucky that day,” said Gudmundsen. Thirty years later, his daughter Heidi won the race in the girls division. Later known as the Dotty Clark Memorial race, it was named for former Bogus Basin ski racer Dorothy “Dotty” Clark, who died in an automobile accident. The daughter of former Idaho Senator D. Worth Clark, she was a senior at Stanford University at the time of her death.
Events include Nordic, freestyle, and downhill racing. Downhill events begin at 10:30am.
